Alienware's flagship gaming laptop, the Area-51 m9750, has plenty of appeal for high-end gamers, but the alien head aesthetic seems dated, and newer components are right around the corner.

The Xtreme Notebooks 917V Accelerator is an unquestionably powerful laptop, but impressed as we are with its performance and 3D frame rates, it's hard to justify the sky-high price. This quad-core laptop seems suited only for those who want a true desktop gaming rig that's still moderately portable.

The ThinkPad X61s provides excellent dual-core performance in a lightweight, compact package that's still comfortable to use.

You can find Blu-ray-equipped desktop replacements for less, but no other media laptop currently offers as many features for the price as the Asus M70.

Alienware's amazingly powerful flagship Area-51 m15x has the insides down, but our finicky aesthetic sense isn't sold on the look of this otherwise awesome 15-inch powerhouse of a gaming laptop.
